Tottenham squad blasted as ‘the Spursiest’ ever despite injury crisis

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has taken yet another downward turn, with former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino harshly criticising the North London side after a week of mediocrity.

A season marred by inconsistency for Spurs

The promise of Ange Postecoglou’s second season was filled with optimism following some encouraging signings and the hope that his progressive style of play would finally push the club forward, but things have unravelled quickly.

The Premier League table reflects this decline—Tottenham are languishing in the bottom half, far from the European places they once fought for.

In cup competitions, where silverware has always seemed within grasp yet frustratingly out of reach, they have already bowed out following disappointing defeats to Liverpool and Aston Villa.

It is a tale as old as time for Tottenham. Their inability to rise to the occasion in decisive moments has seen the term “Spursy” become a common tag associated with the Lilywhites.

Tony Cascarino rips into “Spursy” Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino pulled no punches in his assessment of this current Spurs side, calling them the “Spursiest team” he has ever seen.

“This Tottenham team is the softest, I’d say the most Spursiest team I’ve ever seen. That’s how I feel about them,” Cascarino said.

“I look at them and I think, wouldn’t you have loved to play against them every week? Fourteenth in the table, 24 games, 27 points, 48 goals for and 37 against. But those statistics—all these numbers—are terrible.

“For Spurs to be 14th in the league, and yes, they have had injuries—we all know that Spurs have had loads and loads of injuries—but this team that I witnessed on Thursday night…

“I do not care if that is a second-string Spurs side or not their best eleven. They were nowhere near it. They are conceding goals that your second team should not be conceding.”

No more excuses for abysmal displays

Cascarino’s assessment may feel harsh, but he has a point. Yes, injuries have plagued the squad, and yes, they have been without key players for much of the season, but at what point does that stop being a valid excuse for such dismal performances?

Senior players like Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur should still be taking responsibility on the pitch.

The second goal conceded against Aston Villa was a prime example—neither player tracked back with enough urgency, leaving their defence exposed. Blaming injuries simply does not cut it when players of their calibre fail to do the basics.
