Former MLB GM Claims These Teams ‘Still In’ On Alex Bregman
Before Jeff Passan provided “necessary context” on Alex Bregman, the ESPN MLB insider noted how the star third baseman was “not lacking” suitors in free agency.
A former big league general manager has the same read on the situation.
Jim Bowden, who now works as an insider for The Athletic, took to X on Tuesday night and revealed five teams are “still in” on Bregman. According to Bowden, the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros all remain interested in the two-time World Series champion.
Bowden’s report differed a tad from the latest shared by ESPN’s Buster Olney, who noted how Bregman is “likely” to land with the Red Sox, Cubs or Tigers “soon.” Olney’s information was relayed after the Astros reportedly “improved their initial offer” to the 30-year-old but didn’t really bolster their chances of retaining him.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, might be the “most aggressive” in pursuit of Bregman, but there’s been no indication the two-time All-Star wants to take his talents to Toronto. That’s been a reoccurring theme of the offseason, as the Jays missed out on a series of top talents — like Juan Soto — despite reportedly making very expensive offers.
So, it really might be down to two or three teams that have a realistic chance of signing the star third baseman. And it would make sense for a resolution to come along soon, as spring training is upon us.
