MLB Reporter Attaches Ex-Yankees All-Star Pitcher To Red Sox
Spring training is upon us, but there still are a lot of very talented MLB players out there who are looking for new contracts.
The current landscape of the league’s open market was emphasized in a column put together by The Athletic’s Chad Jennings last week. Jennings went through all 30 clubs and determined a logical free-agency fit, many of whom have at least one All-Star nod on their respective résumés.
One of those veterans was reliever David Robertson, who Jennings believes makes sense for the Boston Red Sox.
“Massive impact would come from signing Alex Bregman, but short of that, the Red Sox could use another dependable arm in their bullpen, and Robertson, who pitched like his old self as a 39-year-old last season,” Jennings wrote. “He would give the team another experienced reliever who could even be an option in an uncertain ninth inning.”
Robertson, who played the first seven seasons of his MLB career with the New York Yankees, has a wealth of experience — including in the playoffs — that could appeal to Alex Cora and company. He also has 177 career saves under his belt, which would make him a legitimate candidate to become Boston’s closer if he became a fixture at Fenway Park.
A deal for Robertson probably wouldn’t be very expensive either, as he will turn 40 in early April.
