Spurs seem convinced that Mathys Tel is a gem

Tottenham’s technical director, Johan Lange, has admitted that everyone at Spurs is delighted to have Tel on board and that they cannot wait to see what he can produce at N17.

Ange Postecoglou is also confident that the 19-year-old will prove a hit in the Premier League and made it clear that he has not been signed just until the end of the season, clearly hinting that Spurs plan on activating the option to buy in the summer.

The teenager certainly had a tough introduction to life at Tottenham, coming on just before the half-time interval in the Carabao Cup semifinal at Anfield to replace the injured Richarlison. He was left chasing shadows all game as Liverpool thumped the Lilywhites 4-0.

While the FA Cup fourth-round match against Aston Villa was also tough, Tel at least opened his account for the Lilywhites with a deft late finish.

David Ornstein on Mathys Tel’s failure at Bayern

Given the amount of transfer interest that Tel generated, it is clear that the youngster is thought of very highly by talent spotters across the game.

If that is the case, many would be curious as to why the Frenchman has got so little game time this season at Bayern, and Ornstein has now revealed what he heard about the forward’s struggles at Bavaria.

The journalist said on The Athletic FC Podcast about Tel’s struggles in Munich: “It hasn’t worked, people around the European football scene with much better expertise than me say that he just hasn’t acclimatised to the step up as well as people thought, maybe it’s the pressure, the expectation or Harry Kane leading the line for Bayern Munich.”

Postecoglou will have to throw Tel into the deep end

While there is no disputing Tel’s talent, he is still very raw and will need to gain some experience before he can become the finished product.

However, if Postecoglou had any ideas of easing him into Premier League football, he will have to scrap those plans now after Richarlison picked up another injury against Liverpool.

With Dominic Solanke already on the treatment table, the newcomer will have to lead the line over the next few weeks.
