Rangers 0 Queen’s Park 1
Queen’s Park provided one of the biggest shocks in Scottish Cup history by defeating Rangers one nil at Ibrox to advance to the quarter finals for the first time since 1983.
Head Coach Callum Davidson made two changes to his starting line up from last week’s defeat at Airdrie – Zach Mauchin replaced Adam Devine who was unavailable to play against his parent club while new loan signing Kyle Hurst started in place of Seb Drozd – more on Seb later!
The game kicked off with the noisy visiting supporters making themselves heard in the away section and as expected Rangers dominated possession testing the Queen’s defence. There was an early scare as a stray pass from Calum Ferrie found Mohamed Diomande, however his shot drifted well wide of Ferrie’s right hand post.
12 minutes in and Ferrie was tested again as a stinging shot from Diomande was brilliantly saved as the pressure on the Queen’s goal ramped up. The Diomande v Ferrie show continued as the Queen’s keeper tipped another shot over the bar for a corner.
Another corner quickly followed, this time Ianis Hagi shot for goal but the Queen’s defence held firm as Jack Turner superbly headed off the line to clear the danger.
The Spiders didn’t create any goal scoring opportunities, however a disciplined and determined team effort kept the game goalless as the half time whistle blew.

Rangers looked to up the pressure in the second half, making a couple of changes – Cyriel Dessers and Nico Raskin came on for Nedim Bajrami and Bailey Rice. The general pattern of the first half continued, however there were signs Queen’s were beginning to find their feet and grew in confidence as the second 45 progressed.
Ferrie again defied the waves of Rangers attacks, this time Hamza Igamane was denied. A VAR check for a possible penalty was a tense moment for all of a black and white persuasion, however the decision was no goal and play continued.
Queen’s first serious attempt at goal happened when a neat pass from Zak Rudden set Ryan Duncan off down the left wing. His delightful pass flashed across the Rangers defence only just eluding the on rushing Kyle Hurst.
Hurst made way for substitute Seb Drozd after 67 minutes and a few minutes later fired Queen’s into the lead. A corner on the Rangers right was played in by Louis Longridge, the ball fell to Seb at the back post who neatly slipped past a defender before firing a low shot through the Rangers keepers legs and into the back of the net – the visitors section erupted!
As expected, Rangers pressed hard to find an equaliser – Ridvan had a shot from distance which cleared the cross bar and a shot from Igamane was saved by Ferrie.
Five minutes of added on time was declared and sub Cyriel Dessers took a touch past a defender and shot from a wide angle, however once again Ferrie saved the day.
Just as tensions were reaching boiling point in the 95th minute – disaster for Queen’s as the dreaded “Penalty to Rangers” cry was met by the referee’s whistle and Calum Scott pointed to the spot. There was contact between a Queen’s defender and Dessers as a header from John Souter landed in the penalty area.
The experienced penalty taker James Tavernier stepped up and fired to the keeper’s left hand post, however Cal Ferrie pulled off a magnificent diving save as the ball was cleared for a corner. If that save was top drawer, from the resultant corner a header from Robin Propper was touched over the bar as Ferrie performed heroics to keep Rangers out.
The final action saw a header drift past from a corner and shortly after the final whistle sounded – Queen’s Park had beaten Rangers in the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1882!
