Tom Brady Rips Early Controversial Call In Super Bowl LIX
It look like the Philadelphia Eagles had the first big play of Super Bowl LIX.
But then a yellow piece of laundry took it away.
The Eagles went for it on fourth-and-2 from midfield on the first possession of the game and Jalen Hurts hit A.J. Brown on a deep pass down the sideline for a 32-yard gain. But Brown was flagged for offensive pass interference on Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie to negate the play. The infraction forced the Eagles to punt.
The call drew an immediate reaction from Tom Brady, who is on the FOX broadcast as a color commentator. Brady didn’t bite his tongue and ripped the call on the field.
“He’s a big, physical, strong receiver,” Brady said. “Just getting off of press (coverage) on McDuffie. Ohh, don’t like that one bit. Just too critical of a game. The hand fighting is going on down the field.”
Brown and McDuffie were hand fighting on the route, but Brown’s hand got into McDuffie’s facemask, which ultimately drew the flag. McDuffie got penalized for unnecessary roughness — hit to the head — on Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert to keep Philadelphia’s second series alive in Kansas City territory, and Brady disagreed with that call, too. He thought the refs bailed Hurts out for a high throw.
Regardless, the Eagles being flagged for a marginal penalty won’t end the narrative that the Chiefs get the benefit of the calls
