WWE Makes Risky Decision Having Jey Uso Win Royal Rumble
The Royal Rumble marks an exciting time in WWE’s calendar, but instead, the event received mixed reviews.
Charlotte Flair and Jey Uso won this year’s women’s and men’s Royal Rumble matches, respectively. Flair’s victory was defensible, given the lack of star power in the women’s division. However, Uso’s crowning achievement was the target of controversy.
NESN’s Jason Ounpraseuth and Athan Hristodulu discussed WWE’s bold decision on the latest “Ringside Review” on “Boston Has Entered The Chat.”
They agreed that while Uso might be over with the crowd, the former WWE tag team champion wasn’t at the top of most people’s lists. John Cena and CM Punk could have offered more compelling stories on the road to Wrestlemania 41 and are better suited for the main event.
Uso might turn 40 on Aug. 22, but he is a fresh star in the minds of WWE fans, and he’s one chief content officer Paul Levesque, aka Triple H, believes in. His rise to the top mirrors Kofi Kingston’s breakthrough run in 2019, and WWE might be trying to replicate his WWE championship victory at Wrestlemania 35.
The one problem is that Uso hasn’t always delivered in the ring like Kingston. While Uso’s entrance gets the crowd pumped, his in-ring work doesn’t elicit the same reactions. Also, while Gunther is a good in-ring worker, he’s no Bryan Danielson, fka Daniel Bryan. Kingston benefitted from working with one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, which made his crowning moment all the more special. Uso and Gunther’s match at “Saturday Night’s Main Event” last month left a lot to be desired and doesn’t inspire confidence if that is the match for Wrestlemania 41.
