Elite Red Sox Prospects Hyped To Show Off Talent At Spring Training
Red Sox spring training is around the corner, and fans will get a closer look at Boston’s elite prospects at Fort Myers, Fla.
Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell not only are the Red Sox’s top prospects but are also among the top prospects in baseball. They put their names on the radar last year and potentially could make their major league debuts this year. The road to that goal starts at spring training.
“I’m super excited personally — I know Roman is, too — to get to spring training, to showcase our skills in front of a large crowd. It’s going to be very special,” Campbell told NESN’s Tom Caron on the “310 To Left” podcast. “I think we’re both looking forward to the opportunity — and Marcelo (Mayer). We’ve been looking forward to it all year, and we worked hard to get to this opportunity. Definitely not going to let it slip away from us.”
The road to the majors isn’t new for Anthony. He was part of an elite group along with Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel last year, and he stands out as the face of Boston’s farm system this year. Anthony hasn’t gotten caught up in his own hype, but that doesn’t mean he and Campbell aren’t thinking about making waves down in Florida.
“I think it’s hard not to think about it, especially now being so close,” Anthony said. “The more I come back here, I say, ‘I’ve come back here a few times.’ And I’ve been up each level each time more and more each time I’ve come back, and it’s felt closer and closer. I think now is about as real as it gets. You try to stay as focused as you can and handle your business in the offseason and do everything you can so that when you show up to spring training, you try to leave no doubts there. It’s definitely something we think about, and we chat about it. That’s the goal. It’s to get there as fast as we can and help the team win. We hold each other accountable and make sure we’re staying on each other and try to get there as quick as we can.”
Pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Feb. 12 and the Red Sox will hold a full workout on Feb. 17 to prepare for a new season.
