How Sam Kennedy Answered Question About Red Sox’s Alex Bregman Interest

The Boston Red Sox have been connected to Alex Bregman for most of the MLB offseason.

So, naturally, Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy was asked about the star free agent Monday when the club hosted its “Truck Day” festivities at Fenway Park.

Kennedy couldn’t divulge much on the subject.

“I’m not allowed to talk about any specific free agent negotiations or anything,” Kennedy said, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, “but given that he’s unsigned, I think that speaks for itself.”

Bregman, who spent the first nine years of his MLB career with the Houston Astros, is the top free agent still available. He also makes a lot of sense for the Red Sox, offering the kind of right-handed thump and veteran leadership that could really help Boston in 2025.

Bregman is likely to command a big contract, though, and it’s unclear whether the Red Sox are willing to go down that route with top prospects Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer — two middle infielders — nearing the majors.

After all, Bregman turns 31 next month and regressed a bit offensively in 2024. While he’d surely improve Boston’s playoff chances in the short-term, it’s fair to wonder how a long-term deal would age in conjunction with the organization’s emerging core.

Nevertheless, the Red Sox will continue to monitor Bregman’s market, which has been tricky to figure out this offseason, especially with the Astros leaving the door open for his return despite making other moves that seemed to point at his departure.

If the stars align, the Red Sox will get a very good player. If not, they’ve still managed to improve this offseason, particularly on the pitching side, and always could explore other additions — via free agency or trades — before Opening Day.

Bregman, a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, is coming off a 2024 in which he slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in 634 plate appearances. He won his first career Gold Glove Award at third base.
