While Mathys Tel has turned down the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur, various publications are now providing a different take on why the Frenchman decided to snub the Lilywhites’ offer.
Tottenham’s efforts to sign Mathys Tel have failed
Despite striking a €60m (£50.1m) deal with Bayern Munich on Thursday for the winger’s transfer, Spurs were unable to convince the player to say yes to a move to N17.
Daniel Levy himself allegedly flew into Germany on Friday to try and push through the deal, but in the end, the teenager decided to reject the Lilywhites’ offer.
This has left Tottenham in a major pickle, with the club in a race against time to secure another forward before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Why Mathys Tel rejected Spurs
Various outlets are now reporting different information on why the Bayern man decided against linking up with Ange Postecoglou‘s side.
According to Inews, the Frenchman was not convinced that he would get regular starts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which is when he did not want to take up the offer.
However, this claim is contradicted by Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, who revealed that Tel was simply not convinced by the project that Spurs put forward.
The journalist says that while the winger could remain at the Allianz Arena, a late transfer is still on the cards, with Man Utd, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea still circling over the player.
Tottenham’s struggles this season are costing them dearly
Signing top players was always going to be difficult for Spurs this window, given that they are hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.
One can understand why players might be hesitant to commit, particularly given that Postecoglou’s future at the club looks far from assured.
Unless Daniel Levy and Johan Lange manage to pull off some huge surprise out of the hat, it seems like this window is going to end in major disappointment for the North London side.
