MLB Rumors: Red Sox Rival Among ‘Most Aggressive’ For Alex Bregman

The Boston Red Sox are among the teams heavily linked to Alex Bregman, but that hasn’t hindered others from trying to court the All-Star.

Bregman and Pete Alonso remain the top two sluggers available in free agency. Bregman reportedly renewed talks with the Astros to return to Houston, and the New York Mets are still open to bringing back Alonso.

However, former MLB general manager Jim Bowden believes the pair could find new homes based on offseason activity.

“There is no question who the most aggressive teams right now for Alonso and Bregman are and its the #BlueJays and #Cubs which could dampen the two from returning to their former teams,” Bowden posted on X on Friday.

Toronto “advanced” in talks with Alonso last week but nothing came to fruition. The Blue Jays did sign Anthony Santander and Max Scherzer, showing they do want to compete this season. Chicago also was a sneaky active team this offseason with trades for Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, two of Bregman’s former teammates.

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, another team offered Bregman a six-year contract and that club was described as not being one of the Gold Glove infielder’s preferred options. It’s possible Chicago or Toronto was one of those teams as they remain linked to the two-time World Series champion despite more reports favoring the Astros, Red Sox and Detroit Tigers.

That probably won’t stop the Cubs or Blue Jays from trying to sign either Bregman or Alonso. It would be bad news for the Red Sox to not only lose out on Bregman but also for the Jays to acquire another power bat to compliment the lineup with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

It’s unclear the order of teams Bregman prefers, but Boston will have to hope Chicago or Toronto isn’t near the top of that list.
