A difficult run for Tottenham as Brentford eye consistency

Tottenham Hotspur’s European campaign brought some much-needed positivity to the club, as Ange Postecoglou’s side secured a convincing 3-0 victory over IF Elfsborg in the Europa League.

That victory though, will do little to mask their struggles in the Premier League, where results have been dire, leaving them languishing in 15th place, far below the expectations set at the beginning of the season.

Sunday’s opponents, Brentford, have fared much better in recent weeks, picking up seven points from their last five league matches. In contrast, Tottenham has just a solitary point in the same period.

Thomas Frank’s side sits 11th in the table and have been particularly strong at the Gtech Community Stadium, where they have won seven of their 12 home fixtures this season, losing just three, making them formidable opposition for a fragile Spurs side in desperate need of a turnaround.

When and where is the game?

The Premier League clash will be hosted at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday, February 2, 2025. The fixture is scheduled for a 2pm UK time kick-off.

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: Team news

Tottenham will be without Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner, Dominic Solanke, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Destiny Udogie, all of whom remain sidelined as they continue their respective rehabilitation programmes.

However, there was a boost for Postecoglou in midweek, as Micky van de Ven and Yves Bissouma made their returns to action, each playing 45 minutes against IF Elfsborg.

As for Brentford, Thomas Frank has several injury concerns of his own, with Aaron Hickey (hamstring) out until mid-May, Ethan Pinnock (knock) doubtful for early February, Gustavo Gomes (back injury) also a doubt, Thiago Rodrigues (virus) expected to return soon, and Joshua Dasilva remaining out until mid-February.

Spurs Web prediction

Tottenham Hotspur’s dire league form makes them difficult to back in this fixture, particularly given Brentford’s solid home record and the absence of key attacking players such as Solanke, Johnson and Maddison, all of whom were instrumental in the reverse fixture victory.

Brentford, meanwhile, have been inconsistent but are more settled in their approach, and with home advantage in their favour, they will fancy their chances of capitalising on Tottenham’s frailties.

A win for Brentford is the most likely outcome in this one and we will be predicting yet more misery for Spurs on Sunday.

Prediction: Brentford 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur.
