Mathys Tel set to make decision after Tottenham agree fee

Tottenham fans on social media are doing their best not to get excited after the news broke yesterday that the club had agreed a fee with Bayern Munich for Tel.

This update first came from L’Equipe, who claimed that Spurs have agreed a fee of €60m (£50.1m) with the Bundesliga giants and are now waiting for a final decision from the 18-year-old regarding the transfer.

If the winger does greenlight the move, the Lilywhites would get their hands on a player who was widely considered one of the best young attackers in the world not too long ago. Albeit, Tel has seen his stock fall over the last six months in light of his lack of game time.

Tottenham supporters have seen some big moves fall through in the final moments over the years, and many are thus refusing to get carried away by the reports for the time being.

What Harry Kane said about Mathys Tel

One man who knows Tel very well is Kane, who has worked with the young forward at the Allianz Arena for the last 18 months.

It is the England captain’s arrival at Bayern that has been one of the main reasons why the Frenchman’s game time has dwindled, but the former Spurs man is seemingly a fan of the youngster’s attitude and his attributes.

When asked about the rumours linking Tel with a move to Spurs, Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports Transfer Centre: “He [Tel] is a very talented player, that’s for sure. He’s 19 and Tottenham have signed a lot of good young players in the last few years. That seems to be the profile of what they are trying to get.

“I messaged Harry Kane earlier on just asking what he’s like as I knew I was coming to speak to you guys and he was very complimentary about him. First of all, he says he’s a great guy. He wants to work, good trainer, good finisher, lot of potential.

“It’s a lot of money, £50 million, for a 19-year-old in the current climate. I can’t think of too many that age that have gone for much more. He has a lot of talent and can play off the left as well – and they have got a lot of big games coming up.

“Coming to Tottenham, would he start? There’s still Son, there’s still Kulusevski, there’s still Solanke when he’s fit, so there’s probably not a guarantee he’s going to come in as a regular starter, but trying to get ahead of Kane at Bayern is not easy.”

Do Tottenham see Tel as a long-term heir to Heung-min Son?

While Tel can play on the right and through the middle, he is at his best when cutting in from the left.

Ange Postecoglou might thus view the Bayern man as someone who can fill Heung-min Son’s shoes over the long term, with the France Under-21 international being not too dissimilar a player to the South Korean.

If it is true that Spurs are offering Tel promises of a key role in the starting eleven, one does wonder what that means for the future of Son at N17.
