Hi and welcome to this weekend;s preview with Royston Town FC, Royston Town Women and Royston Town Reserves.

 

First up, Royston Town host local rivals Biggleswade Town in the Southern League Premier Central, on Saturday in a 3pm kick-off. Our first-ever league meeting between the sides dates back to the 1980/81 season in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division. Since then the clubs have met numerous times with our last 15 meetings ending in 9 wins for Royston Town, 2 draws and 4 victories for Biggleswade Town with the highest scoring game being a 6-4 win for Biggleswade Town at Garden Walk back in December 2018 – since then Royston having been unbeaten in 8 games against them with a 1-1 draw in the mix.

Next up, Royston Town Women host another club from Biggleswade when they play Biggleswade United Women in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Cup Quarter Finals, on Sunday in a 2pm kick-off. Our visitors play in the Division One North and have some former Royston Town players including Amy Josland who was with the Crows for 3 seasons scoring 7 goals in 64 games alongside Katie White who departed this season for Biggleswade United, and to put your memory to the test Harriett Smith, Megan Kaba and a player who played in outfield and in goal, Grace Leslie.

Last up, Royston Town Reserves travel to Welwyn Garden City when they take on AFC Welwyn in the Spartan South Midlands, Division One, on Saturday in a 3pm kick-off. Hosts AFC Welwyn are one of the youngest teams having only being formed in 2023 and are in their 2nd season of senior football when promoted from Step 7 and are aiming for back-to-back promotion to Step 5. AFC Welwyn have a number of former Royston Town players in their squad, with Jack Bradshaw, Scott Bridges, Dan Green and James Potton playing for the club.

Where did they get the nickname the Romans? Mostly likely the Roman Baths that are preserved under the A1 Motorway just north of Welywn Garden City is a place called the Welwyn Roman Baths which was originally built in the 3rd century AD, the baths were a small part of the Dicket Mead Villa. If anyone is also wondering about the Latin on the club badge, Sic Parvis Magna is Roman for “greatness from small beginnings”.
