Development in Football: Beginnings in the United States

This is Elijah Portnoy's second season with IFX Soccer, and his performance continues to impress. At just 18 years old, the North American forward is steadily climbing the ranks in German football. "Eli" began his football career at Solar SC in his hometown of Allen, Texas, where he competed in high-level leagues such as MLS Next and the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (DA). From a young age, he showed a natural talent and passion for football, which led him to seek opportunities beyond his home country. Eli first connected with our agency in 2023, when he decided to join our German Football Boarding School partner Soccer City in search of growth both in football and personally.

Football Career: Transition to Germany

At just 17 years old, Eli joined the German Football Boarding school Soccer City in Thüringen. There, he experienced intense German-style training, participated in federated league competitions, and continued his formal education. His performance with the academy's partner team, 1.FC Eichsfeld, was outstanding. Elijah made a significant impact in the A-Junioren Verbandsliga, scoring 6 goals in 9 matches. He then scored 6 goals in 9 matches with the second team in the Kreisoberliga and finally, with the first team in the Thüringenliga, he scored 7 goals and provided 1 assist in 18 matches. This reaffirmed IFX Soccer's interest in seeking new opportunities for this talented player.

IFX Soccer Agency: New Opportunities

After a successful 2023-24 campaign with 1.FC Eichsfeld IFX Soccer and our partner Soccer Career Consulting worked hard to find new opportunities for Eli. Private soccer trials were arranged through our networks with major professional clubs in the Thüringen and Bayern areas. Portnoy's performance was impressive, and several clubs offered him a place on their teams. Ultimately, it was FC Würzburger Kickers that captured Elijah's interest. Würzburger Kickers is a well-known German football club currently competing in the 4th division Regionalliga Bayern, with professional-level facilities and coaching staff. This opportunity marked another step in Eli's path of growth in German soccer.

During his transition, Eli trialed with several teams at competitive levels, including Berliner AK 07, Chemnitzer FC, and FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt. "Each trial offered a unique experience that helped me adapt to different playing styles and expectations. Ultimately, landing at U19 FWK was a perfect fit for my goals and aspirations," Elijah explained.

Pro IFX Year: A New Challenge

In the 2024-25 season, with FWK committed to signing Portnoy, Eli moved to the Bayern region and joined the Pro IFX Year program. This program not only provides accommodations for their participants but also German language courses and additional training alongside his club obligations. Eli joined the U19 team of FWK, where he has scored 2 goals in 8 appearances in the competitive U19 Bayernliga. Moving up to this level certainly brings many challenges, but it also offers invaluable and unprecedented experience for Eli, furthering his journey of development and growth in German soccer.

Eli described his experience at FWK: "The setup at FWK is incredible. The club is very supportive and encourages me to play a strong German style. It combines professional training with the independence I was looking for. Living on my own taught me responsibility and self-discipline, which have been as crucial off the field as on it. The environment at FWK feels like a true stepping stone to professional success."

Support and Development

Eli's journey has been supported by both the club and IFX Soccer. "The support from both the club and IFX was exceptional. They helped me settle in quickly, navigate any challenges, and provided guidance whenever needed. This support was invaluable in making my transition smooth and helping me focus on my goals," he noted. Moreover, Eli's family has played a fundamental role in supporting all his decisions regarding his future. Their unwavering support has been crucial in allowing him to continue pursuing his goals in Germany.

Training with FWK has been rigorous and rewarding. Elijah trains three to four days a week, with sessions that include technical drills, tactical work, fitness training, and scrimmages. He also trains three times a week in a gym. "The sessions are intense and focused, pushing me to improve every day," Eli said.

Living and Playing in Germany

Elijah currently lives in a rented studio apartment close to training facilities and essential amenities. "This setup provides a balance of independence and support, allowing me to focus entirely on my development and learning of the German language," he explained. The experience of living in Germany has been enriching for Eli. "The most exciting part is being surrounded by a culture that lives and breathes soccer. Every match, every training session, and even the daily lifestyle here is geared toward excellence. It’s inspiring to be part of that environment and to live in a country with such deep soccer traditions."

Future Aspirations

Elijah Portnoy has come a long way from his beginnings in Texas to making a name for himself in German soccer. His journey is an example of how dedication and talent can open doors and create opportunities. With his skill and determination, Eli is destined to achieve great things in his football career, continuing his path of growth in German soccer.
