Josh McDaniels Has These Goals Upon Taking Over Patriots Offense

Josh McDaniels isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel in his return to New England.

The Patriots will look to get back toward competency under his leadership, and while a litany of things will need to take place for that to happen, the primary goals are relatively simple. New England will look to take care of the ball and score.

Yes, it’s that simple.

McDaniels discussed his role in a team-provided video on Thursday, which helped delve into those simple points a bit more.

“The offense only takes the field for one reason and that’s to try to put points on the board,” McDaniels said. “Our No. 1 goal will be to take care of it, and the second part will be to score as much as we can. …This year has given me an opportunity to really consider all aspects of what this job entails. I’m excited about what we’re going to build here — and the evolution of our offensive scheme, our offensive attitude, the way we do things, how we practice and ultimately how we’re playing.”

The Patriots have the largest foundational piece you could ask for in Drake Maye, but helping the young signal-caller continue to develop while installing a new system won’t be easy. McDaniels will have to do that, while also aiding in the search for talent upgrades that can keep the club up to speed with the rest of the NFL. New England isn’t the easiest place to get all of that done, but at least the guy in charge has a successful track record in the role.
