Cristian Romero has had a stop-start season with Spurs

Cristian Romero has already suffered four different injuries this season, which have seen him 31 matches for Tottenham. To make things worse, he was injured in his first match back in December after recovering from a hamstring problem, and he has not made an appearance since (Transfer Markt).

The Argentine defender has played 14 matches this season in all competitions and while he has now returned to training, it is likely with such limited game time that he will be a little rusty at first.

Spurs have clearly missed Romero and his defensive partner, Micky van de Ven. They have only recorded one clean sheet in their past 10 matches and that was against non-league outfit, Tamworth.

Ange Postecoglou reveals Cristian Romero will not play against Leicester City

Postecoglou was criticised when Romero and van de Ven both picked up injuries against Chelsea in December, as neither player was expected to start the match.

It looks as if he is determined not to repeat the mistake of rushing injured players back into the first team, as Romero will not feature in Tottenham’s next match on Sunday.

Asked whether Romero would be in Tottenham’s matchday squad to face Leicester, Postecoglou said: “No. Like I said, we got him back training. Him and Micky are the next cabs off the rank in terms of the long-term ones. They’ve still got a bit to do in terms of getting some training into them with the team.

“Obviously we haven’t been training a lot and because the other day was sort of low tempo session, it was just good to get him involved, not just for him but the players involved because they need a bit of help and encouragement and Cuti training with them gives them a big lift.”

Postecoglou then added: “Micky’s not too far away.” (Football London).

Which centre-backs will be selected when Spurs take on Leicester City?

Tottenham’s next Premier League clash will likely see Radu Dragusin partner up with Ben Davies, as was the case on Thursday when Spurs defeated Hoffenheim.

Archie Gray has played a number of matches at centre-back, but with Djed Spence suffering a knock last weekend, the 18-year-old may have to cover at left-back.

Although it would be useful to have Romero back as soon as possible, Spurs have two important cup matches in early February. It is therefore essential that the World Cup-winning defender is given the time he needs to get back to full fitness.
