One Big Takeaway From Bruins’ Statement Win Over Senators

It wasn’t a high-scoring game, but then again, it didn’t need to be. The Bruins just needed the win.

Boston only needed one goal to defeat the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night, and it came off the red-hot stick of Morgan Geekie in the middle frame.

David Pastrnak had a great dish coming out from behind the Ottawa net to feed Geekie, who was driving toward the crease.

The tally was Geekie’s fifth of the month and 13th of the season. The 26-year-old forward lit the lamp six times in the month of December.

With the primary assist on Geekie’s goal and an empty-net tally to secure the 2-0 victory, Pastrnak extended his point streak to six games. The Bruins superstar has seven assists and six goals in that span.

Boston’s penalty kill and Joonas Korpisalo preserved the one-goal lead in the third period when the Senators had a two-man advantage for 33 seconds. Korpisalo made 30 saves, including six while shorthanded for his ninth win and third shutout of the season.

The character victory came at the right time for the Bruins after being blown out by the New Jersey Devils the night before in the first game of a back-to-back.

The Bruins get back to work on Saturday afternoon when they host the Colorado Avalanche. Puck drop from TD Garden is scheduled at 1 p.m. ET, and you can catch all the action on NESN, following an hour of pregame coverage.
