Expert warns Tottenham away from transfer target – ‘Cannot think of a worse fit’
A European football expert has been left perplexed by Tottenham’s rumoured interest in a Paris Saint-Germain star, insisting that the player would be a terrible fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system.
Ange Postecoglou is still waiting for defensive reinforcements
It was clear heading into January that Spurs needed reinforcements in central defence, given their current injury situation.
However, with two-thirds of the window now done, the club are yet to deliver a centre-back to Postecoglou, who has had to make do with Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin in the heart of defence.
Tottenham’s defensive woes once again cost them the points against Everton on Sunday, with the away side in sixes and sevens at the back in the first half as David Moyes’ men cut through them with ease time and again.
European expert questions Tottenham’s transfer pursuit
At this point, Spurs fans will just be happy to see any centre-half arrive through the door, including PSG’s Milan Skriniar, who is rumoured to be one of the players on the North London club’s radar.
It has been widely reported over recent weeks that the Ligue 1 giants are ready to let the 29-year-old leave and that Spurs are battling the likes of Aston Villa to sign the former Inter Milan man on loan.
Others have reported that Tottenham have actually failed in their pursuit of Skriniar because his wages were too much of a stumbling block.
However, The Athletic’s European football expert, Alex Barker, has now opined on social media that the Slovak international’s deficiency in possession will make him a major liability in Tottenham’s system.
There is a reason Milan Skriniar is being let go by PSG
The fact that Luis Enrique does not even see Skriniar as a squad option is all the evidence one needs about the defender’s ability to play in a possession-based set-up.
There is now sufficient evidence to suggest that the Tottenham recruitment department made a mistake by signing Radu Dragusin, and the last thing they should do is compound it by signing another defender of a similar profile.
