James Maddison says Tottenham squad cannot hide behind injuries
James Maddison had some blunt words to say about Tottenham’s first-half performance at Goodison Park. The Spurs midfielder insists they cannot hide behind injuries in North London.
Alarm bells ringing at Hotspur Way
We have heard plenty of media reports over recent weeks suggesting that Postecoglou has the full support of Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy.
However, the club now find themselves in a situation unlike any they have experienced for two and a half decades, languishing in 15th place in the table, with an outside chance of being sucked into a relegation battle.
While there is no doubt that Tottenham’s injury situation has been unprecedented, the big question is whether the club’s decision-makers can afford to wait for key players to return before taking evasive action on the managerial front.
James Maddison: Tottenham cannot hide behind injuries
Maddison has refused to use Tottenham’s bloated injury list as an excuse for their latest defeat, admitting that the first-half performance from the side was not good enough.
The Spurs vice-captain called on everyone at Hotspur Way to stick together through this difficult moment.
Speaking after Tottenham’s 3-2 loss against Everton, Maddison told Spurs Play: “We’re in a tough moment. I’ve not got too much to say, to be honest. The squad’s a bit depleted but the first half was nowhere near good enough.”
When asked about the club’s injury list, he said: “It’s never ideal, but it doesn’t explain the 3-0 scoreline at half-time. We’ve just got to be stronger, defend better and be more resilient.
“With everything considered, it’s a tough moment, and through a bit of adversity we’ve got to stick together and grind it out, it’s the only way.”
Maddison on the reaction from away fans
As one would have expected, the Spurs travelling contingent at Merseyside did not take kindly to the performance they saw from the side.
There were some ugly scenes after the final whistle when Postecoglou and Heung-min Son went over to the away section, with the fans targeting them with expletive chants.
When asked about the reaction of the supporters, Maddison responded: “The fans are going to be rightly disappointed. We’ve got to take that criticism on the chin, all of us.
“They’re entitled to their opinion – a few unhappy fans in the away end there, and rightly so. You’ve got to own up to it, you’ve got to accept that we weren’t good enough and take that criticism on the chin.”
