Is Ange Postecoglou’s time at Spurs running out?

Irrespective of what one’s opinion is on the role of Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy in the current mess, it is now getting to a point where the club might have no choice but to make a big change to pull themselves out of this predicament.

Spurs are dropping fast in the Premier League table, now having an outside chance of being sucked into a relegation battle if their current poor form continues for a few more weeks.

Fortunately for Ange, reports emerged on Monday morning that Tottenham have no plans to sack Postecoglou any time soon. Instead, they want to support him through this current crisis.

While Postecoglou will understandably point to the huge injury list, the big question is whether the club’s top brass can afford to be patient and wait for the key stars to return.

Jermain Defoe worried for Postecoglou’s future

Defoe admits that he does not take any pleasure from questioning Postecoglou’s future at Hotspur Way, explaining that he has loved the style of football the Australian has brought to the club.

However, the former Spurs striker asserts that it is difficult for the club to allow this to continue, given the lack of defensive improvements.

Defoe told Goal Rush on Optus Sport following Tottenham’s loss at Goodison Park: “You have to worry for Ange to be honest. It’s frustrating, I can imagine all the Spurs fans’ frustration, and the reason I say it’s frustrating for the Spurs fans is because when you look at Tottenham play, you’d enjoy going to watch Tottenham play.

“They create a lot of chances, and the way they’re playing is completely different to when Conte was there, Mourinho, even Nuno. But the other side of it, when you concede that many goals in that sort of manner as well, it’s hard.”

Referring to Everton’s opener from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Defoe quipped: “Tottenham have got a lot of bodies there, [it’s] easily avoidable. And even [the second goal] I feel like [Ndiaye] has run through the middle of the pitch too easily there… You’re still looking at that thinking he’s run through the heart of the team.”

Defoe asks Postecoglou to prioritise results

Defoe believes that the Tottenham head coach can no longer hide behind his principles of play and has to do what he can to ensure that Spurs get results.

He suggested that it is negligent of Postecoglou to not adapt his methods when his side keeps making the same mistakes out on the pitch.

The 42-year-old added: “You have to find a way to win games. You have to find a way to win football matches. With managers and coaches, there’ll be periods where you may have to tweak and change.

“I’m not saying go against your principles, because we know Ange and his principles are to be aggressive and to dictate build-up [with] the fullbacks pushing on and play that way. But at the same time, I feel like you have to be able to adapt, because when you keep making the same mistakes and conceding that many goals, it can’t be right.”
