Spurs’ injury crisis has upended their season and Ange Postecoglou now needs to reinforce his squad with players who can reliably contribute going forwards. Jonathan David appears to be a perfect player for Tottenham in that regard.

Tottenham need outfield players

Two-and-a-half weeks have passed since the opening of the January transfer window and Tottenham have not yet added any outfield players.

Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Ben Davies have returned to training which will alleviate some of the strain being placed on available players.

However, this season has shown that Tottenham still need greater depth across the squad to compete in multiple competitions.

Jonathan David has an impeccable injury record

Lille’s Jonathan David has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham over the last few transfer windows. With 6 months remaining on his contract, a move in January is the last opportunity for Lille to generate a transfer fee from his growingly inevitable departure.

Dr Rajpal Brar at Tottenham News has discussed David‘s injury history and claims he has a pretty perfect fitness record for Tottenham in that regard.

Brar said: “He’s had a pretty ideal record in terms of his fitness. Last season too, there weren’t any issues and he even played every league game for LOSC Lille. Wouldn’t expect clearing his medical to be an issue with him also being relatively young at 25.”

As well as availability, Spurs need the right profile of attacker

Jonathan David has only missed 3 matches from injury in the last 4.5 seasons at Lille. While Richarlison is an ideal match for Ange Postecoglou’s style of centre-forward, he has missed 62 matches in the same length of time.

There is hope that Richarlison can maintain fitness after being brought back cautiously from this latest injury lay-off. However, more than just another striker, Tottenham need someone who can lead the press, hold up play and take chances in the box.

Additionally, while striker depth is important in providing rotation and rest for Dominic Solanke, Spurs also need a wide forward who can take on their fullback.

While David represents the type of availability which Tottenham should target, they need their profile to match Postecoglouu’s needs as well.
