Alex Bregman Rumors: Surprising Suitor ‘In Mix’ With Red Sox

Alex Bregman remains the top free agent on the market after Roki Sasaki decided his team, and the Boston Red Sox also remain in the running.

Bregman’s agent Scott Boras laid out his client’s needs clearly. Top contenders like the Houston Astros and New York Yankees took themselves out of the All-Star’s market, and Boston and the Detroit Tigers are viewed as the favorites to sign him.

However, the longer things play the more, the more of a chance there could be that other teams try to inquire about Bregman’s services. That could be the case with a surprise team an MLB insider named Friday.

“The Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mets and Cubs are all still in the mix for Bregman to varying degrees, though none appear prepared to give him the deal he’s seeking,” MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand wrote.

New York is still trying to re-sign Pete Alonso, but it’s been floated as a potential Bregman spot as a backup plan. And Toronto has been linked to multiple free agents, though it hasn’t been able to land one. But Chicago was not a team on many analysts’ radars. The Cubs did make a splash trade with the Astros for Kyle Tucker. Isaac Paredes was part of the deal, so Chicago has a hole at third base, so the fit makes sense. How serious competitors it is in the market is unknown. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer was booed by fans Saturday for being noncommittal about the club’s interest in Bregman.

The Red Sox aren’t out on the two-time World Series champion, but the days are counting down toward spring training.
