Tottenham confirm new contract and loan deal for 19-year-old starlet
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that one academy graduate has now sealed his first loan move to get a taste of senior football in the Scottish Premiership. He also signed a new long-term contract with Spurs before leaving on loan.
Tottenham youngster aims to put injury issues behind him
There was a lot of excitement around Alfie Dorrington at Tottenham around a year ago, but a lot of that has died down due to the injuries the youngster has endured.
2024 was a year to forget for the 19-year-old ball-playing centre-back, who suffered multiple hamstring injuries, but he now aims to get his career back on track after putting his fitness woes behind him.
The teenager was handed his senior Tottenham debut in Spurs’ 5-0 win against Southampton last month and Ange Postecoglou admitted last week that the club want Dorrington to test himself out on loan.
Alfie Dorrington new contract and loan move
Dorrington will now indeed get a taste of senior football after Tottenham confirmed that they had struck an agreement to loan the Spurs academy graduate to Aberdeen for the rest of the season.
Tottenham also revealed that Dorrington signed a new long-term contract with the club until 2029.
The centre-back will now get some valuable experience in the north as Aberdeen, with the club currently sitting in fourth place in the Scottish Premiership. He will even get to vie for a Europa League qualification spot, which goes to the team that finishes third.
The England Under-19 international will get a chance to play in front of some big crowds in Scotland, and Postecoglou will be watching with interest to see how he copes with the pressure.
Would a Championship or a League One loan have been better?
Some might be wondering why Tottenham could not find a club in the Championship or League One for Dorrington, as they have with a number of their academy youngsters.
However, it is worth keeping in mind that the centre-back is coming off a lengthy injury layoff and is trying to work his way back up to match sharpness.
Tottenham’s priority would have been to find Dorrington a club where he is guaranteed regular minutes, and it appears Aberdeen were prepared to offer such a guarantee.
