Would Bill Belichick Consider North Carolina Split For NFL Return?

Bill Belichick hasn’t broken in his North Carolina hoodie at Chapel Hill yet.

Still, that isn’t preventing the conversation centering around Belichick’s return to an NFL sideline from arising. There has been a total of six head coaching vacancies that have opened before the start of the playoffs, but with Belichick busy recruiting recent high school graduates, the 72-year-old won’t be fielding any of the calls.

Or should Belichick flee the college gig to get back to chasing Vince Lombardi’s?

“Think of that post-June 1 buyout,” George Balekji said on NESN’s “Boston Has Entered The Chat” podcast. “He gets in, gets them the NIL money, shows his son the ropes on how to navigate UNC, has everything together, gets the first recruiting class out of the way. He gives them a bump from six wins to nine, all of a sudden UNC is a little cooler, puts his son Steve in the forefront and then he dips for the NFL.”

Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million contract with North Carolina which included a $10 million buyout option if he chooses to leave before June 1. It’s not far-fetched to imagine Belichick could be itching for a return to the NFL at some point through his stint with the Tar Heels.

North Carolina went 6-7 this past season, finishing toward the bottom end of the ACC.
