Tottenham player met with Istanbul Basaksehir but transfer never happened
Istanbul Basaksehir manager Cagdas Atan has told the Turkish media they tried to sign one Tottenham man back in the summer and even held a meeting with the player.
Ange Postecoglou has been forced to hand minutes to Reguilon
Until a month ago, it looked for all money that Sergio Reguilon had already played his final game for Spurs, but the club’s injury situation has forced Ange Postecoglou to hand minutes to the left-back.
However, that should not be taken as evidence that the Spaniard is now part of Postecoglou‘s plans, particularly given that he has just six months left on his contract.
Additionally, it has been widely reported that Tottenham are expected to prioritise signing a new left-back this month, which would likely spell the end for Reguilon at Spurs.
Manager makes confession about failed Sergio Reguilon pursuit
Istanbul Basaksehir boss Cagdas Atan has now admitted that the Tottenham man was one of several big-name full-backs that the Turkish club tried to sign last summer.
In fact, he admitted that they even met with Reguilon during the previous transfer window, but were ultimately not able to get the deal over the line.
Atan told Beinsports: “I had a FaceTime call with Trippier in person. We tried to bring Alex Telles in a lot; We met with Reguilon. We chased the transfer of Onur Bulut until the last moment. We could have been in a much more comfortable position if those transfers had happened. We have to get a right-back and a left-back.”
Reguilon could get another opportunity to move to Turkey
Despite snubbing a move to Istanbul Basaksehir back in the summer, Reguilon might get another chance to head to the Turkish capital this month.
This is because it has been reported over recent weeks that former Spurs boss, Jose Mourinho, wants to reunite with the Spain international at Fenerbahce – if he doesn’t join Everton in the mean time.
The Portuguese coach, who was the man who signed Reguilon at Tottenham from Real Madrid in 2020, has allegedly informed the Fenerbahce hierarchy to bring the left-back to Istanbul, with the Lilywhites said to be open to a sale.
