Vote For Your December 2024 Reading Player Of The Month
We’ve got five candidates for our final POTM award of last year.
We’ve got one final bit of housekeeping to do from the last calendar year: you guessed it, we’re after your Player of the Month for December 2024.
December was an extremely busy month for Reading in a number of ways. The Royals’ first team played a whopping eight times, across three competitions (League One, FA Cup, Pizza Vase) and of course had a managerial change in there too.
Performance-wise it was also an extremely eclectic month. December included the three worst displays of the season, going by our average player ratings: Walsall away (4.64), Blackpool at home (4.73) and Lincoln City away (4.46). However, there was also time for some of our strongest ratings of 2024/25: the performances against Cambridge United at home (6.58) and Northampton Town at home (6.55) being outdone by just four games earlier in the season.
So what about individual standouts? Have a look at our candidates and vote at the bottom of the piece.
We’ve also got November’s winner to announce. Congratulations to Harvey Knibbs, who took almost half of the vote (49%), well ahead of Tyler Bindon (24%), Charlie Savage (17%) and Chem Campbell (10%).
Tyler Bindon
Average rating: 6.83 / Man of the match awards: 3rd (Cambridge United H), 1st (Wycombe Wanderers A), 2nd (Blackpool H), 2nd (Lincoln City A), 1st (Mansfield Town H)
Let’s be honest, Bindon is very probably going to win this one, isn’t he? I was actually a little tempted to just give it to him without a vote, but ya know, tradition/due process and all that.
Bindon was a remarkably consistent performer in a month that, as previously mentioned, was not consistent for Reading overall. His average rating is the highest of anyone in the entire squad, he got into the top three of our MOTM in all but one of the six games he played, and won it twice.
It didn’t matter how well Reading overall were playing - Bindon still impressed. The Royals were particularly poor against Blackpool and Lincoln, but the youngster remained a dependable performer at the heart of defence. He even popped up with a vital, acrobatic winner against Mansfield to ensure Reading ended 2024 on a high note.
Mamadi Camara
Average rating: 5.13 / Man of the match awards: 0
Yes, I know, it’s a left-field shout. Camara wasn’t that great overall in December, with an average rating of 5.13/10 that’s not particularly high in the context of Reading’s squad and he didn’t get into the top three of any MOTM votes buuuttt he did finish as Reading’s top scorer for December (four goals!), so that’s got to be worth an inclusion.
Amadou Mbengue
Average rating: 6.4 / Man of the match awards: 2nd (Northampton Town H), 2nd (Mansfield Town H)
Although Bindon had a strong December, his centre-back partner Mbengue performed admirably too. His average rating was the second-highest of any Reading player last month, and stood out in the two home games which finished off 2024.
Joel Pereira
Average rating: 6.33 / Man of the match awards: 1st (Blackpool H), 1st (Lincoln City A)
This was another solid month between the sticks for Reading’s number one, who was consistently solid for the most part. helping the Royals to good results against Wycombe Wanderers, Northampton and Mansfield. As for the other two games - the really poor collective performances - Pereira kept up his usual standard to (largely single-handedly) keep the score-lines respectable.
Lewis Wing
Average rating: 6.0 / Man of the match awards: 1st (Cambridge United H), 1st (Northampton Town H), 3rd (Mansfield Town H)
A brace against Cambridge and three assists meant Wing was Reading’s leading goal contributor in December, albeit not the top scorer. Naturally those two goals were absolute screamers, particularly the second one, which will undoubtedly be a contender for the club’s goal of the season.
