Expert claims Spurs are ‘in a fantastic position’ to dominate January window
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has explained why Tottenham Hotspur are well-placed to be one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders in the January window.
Tottenham expected to be among the busiest clubs in January
There is no doubt that Spurs are in need of major reinforcements across the pitch in January and reports indicate that the club will be one of the most active in the transfer window with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy under pressure from supporters to back his manager.
In fact, some sources have suggested that as many as five players could potentially arrive through the door if the Lilywhites get their way.
However, at the same time, other outlets have claimed that Tottenham might put off big-money acquisitions until the summer and may concentrate on deepening their squad by adding numbers.
Tottenham well-placed to have a big window
Kieran Maguire has pointed out that Spurs have a lot of leeway with respect to the Premier League‘s profit and sustainability rules.
Given the Lilywhites’ modest wage bill, he suggested that they could take the lead by making some big moves if they wanted to.
Maguire told The Standard: “I don’t think there as many clubs in a precarious position (compared to the summer). I think clubs are, in the main, slightly better off. I think it needs somebody to set it in motion and then there can quite often be a ripple effect. Who that club is going to be, is difficult to identify.
“Tottenham can spend money, but you are never quite sure. They tend to be followers rather than leaders. Spurs are in a fantastic position. Their wages as a proportion of revenue is lower than anybody else.”
Potential January transfer window domino effect
The January windows usually tend to be much quieter than the summer, with clubs’ top targets often not being in the market.
Historically, we have not seen too many big-money moves mid-season, but Maguire pointed out that all that has to happen is for one huge deal to go through as that would have a domino effect across the market.
He added: “Manchester City have got a lot of money to spend, so if they sign a couple of players [that could start a ripple effect]. If somebody decides that they are going to sign one of their summer targets in January, then that could accelerate things. I think it will be a wait-and-see window.”
