Tottenham consider 27-year-old as an alternative to Ben Godfrey
Tottenham Hotspur have made a decision on Ben Godfrey after they were offered a chance to sign the England international and have identified a potential alternative.
Could Spurs offer Ben Godfrey a route back to the PL?
Godfrey has had a forgettable six months since making the move from Everton to Atalanta last summer, with the centre-back struggling to get a look in at the Serie A side.
It has been suggested over recent weeks that the 26-year-old could make a swift return to England, with Spurs being credited with an interest in the defender.
It has been claimed that Ange Postecoglou is a fan of the former Norwich man and that the Lilywhites could push through a loan deal for the player, which Atalanta are ready to sanction.
Tottenham make Godfrey decision and eye alternative
The Daily Mail have now confirmed that Spurs have indeed been offered the chance to sign Godfrey in January amidst their defensive woes.
However, the outlet claims that the North London club have decided that they will not be pursuing the Englishman. Instead, the report states that Borussia Monchengladbach’s Ko Itakura has been ‘floated as an alternative’ for Postecoglou‘s side.
The Japan international spent three years at Manchester City from 2019 to 2022 but did not get a game for Pep Guardiola’s men, instead being shipped out on loan to the Eredivisie and the Bundesliga.
The 27-year-old has emerged as one of the most consistent and reliable defenders in the German top-flight over the last two years at Gladbach and his current contract at the club has 18 months left to run.
Spurs rumoured to have begun work on Ko Itakura deal
This is not the first we are hearing of Tottenham’s interest in Itakura, with TBR Football reporting on Monday that the pacy centre-back is on the Lilywhites’ radar.
In fact, the outlet claimed that Spurs had already reached out to intermediaries to hold talks about potentially bringing the former Man City man to N17.
Postecoglou would be well aware of Itakura’s qualities, having come up against the defender during his time in charge of J League side, Yokohama Marinos.
