Tottenham should look to sign ‘brilliant’ Liverpool player – Paul Robinson
Paul Robinson believes that Tottenham Hotspur should look no further than Merseyside to solve a gaping hole in their squad.
Is Tottenham’s goalkeeping issue an emergency?
Until a few days ago, the general consensus at Tottenham might have been that the club could make do with Fraser Forster until Guglielmo Vicario recovers, with the Englishman hardly putting a foot wrong until Thursday.
However, the Englishman’s big weakness with the ball at his feet was exposed in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal tie as he gifted two goals to Man Utd, almost costing his side a place in the final four of the competition.
It has previously been reported that Ange Postecoglou is not convinced about the 36-year-old’s decision-making in possession, and those fears were well and truly realised against the Red Devils.
Will Spurs sign a goalkeeper in January?
Paul Robinson believes that his former club will wait until the summer to bring a goalkeeper through the door and he believes that Anfield might be the right place to raid.
The former Spurs man suggested that Caoimhin Kelleher could be on the market, now that Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to arrive at Liverpool as Alison Becker’s understudy next summer.
Speaking about Tottenham’s goalkeeper pursuit, Robinson told Football Insider: “There’s nobody out there at the moment, which is why I disagree, I don’t think there’s a huge rush. Fraser Forster’s done okay, he’s a good goalkeeper.
“You look at him, you look at the experience that he’s got, I don’t think for what you’re going to get on loan or as an emergency signing now for what you’re going to buy now, you need to buy better than what you’ve got. I’m not so sure you do when you look at the options out there, January is always typically, it’s a difficult month to do business.
“They’re linked with John Victor, aren’t they? Remember where he plays his football now, he’s on loan at Botafogo, he’s on loan at Valladolid last year, I think.
“He’s got a little bit of experience but you’re paying five or six million for a goalkeeper that’s untried and untested at that level. [They’re] linked with Anthony Patterson at Sunderland, 24 years old. He’s a good goalkeeper, not so sure he goes in ahead of Fraser Forster, not sure you trust the goalkeeper that you bring in at that age.
“Don’t bring somebody in who’s not better than what you’ve already got, [I] just don’t think there’s anybody out there in January that would fit the bill. Caoimhin Kelleher’s time at Liverpool with Marmadashvili coming in, that would be a brilliant option if we were talking in the summer.”
Guglielmo Vicario’s recovery may dictate Spurs’ January decision
While Postecoglou might decide to keep faith in Forster despite his latest howlers, Tottenham would be in big trouble if the former Saints man gets injured or sent off.
That is why the Lilywhites will be taking a massive gamble if they do not sign a goalkeeper next month.
Their decision may ultimately come down to Vicario‘s progress. If Spurs sense that the Italian will not be back until March, they could sign a young goalkeeper from the EFL.
