Tottenham are big fans of 18-year-old defender

The player in question is Chelsea academy graduate Josh Acheampong, who made his senior debut for the Blues in their 2-0 win over Tottenham towards the end of last season.

Reports first emerged back in the summer that Spurs were big fans of the right-back and were plotting a move for him as he entered the final year of his deal at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham’s interest in the 18-year-old was once again backed up in October, with sources revealing at that time that Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa were also maintaining a watching brief on the teenager.

Josh Acheampong makes contract decision

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca had offered Spurs and other suitors a blow last week when he revealed that the club are making progress in their efforts to tie down Acheampong to a new deal.

Now, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that the young defender has indeed committed his future to the West London club.

The journalist confirmed that Acheampong has put pen to paper on a new five-year contract with his boyhood club, thus ending any talk of a potential transfer in January or next summer.

A right-back is not a priority for Tottenham

Given that Ange Postecoglou has Pedro Porro, Djed Spence and Archie Gray at his disposal, signing a right-back is not a pressing need for the Lilywhites.

However, Postecoglou, Johan Lange and co would have seen Acheampong as an astute investment for the future, which is why they would be disappointed at this development.
