Red Sox Rumors: What Boston’s Plans Are After Patrick Sandoval Deal

The Red Sox reportedly added a left-hander to the rotation Friday and might not be done bolstering their depth.

According to multiple reports, Boston and Patrick Sandoval agreed to a two-year contract. The former Los Angeles Angels pitcher underwent Tommy John surgery in June and hopes to return to action in the second half of the 2025 season.

Corbin Burnes and other frontline starters like Walker Buehler and Jack Flaherty remain unsigned, and the reported Sandoval deal likely won’t take Boston out of the running for them.

The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported the Red Sox were “still open to other rotation moves,” and The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey added that Boston was “still exploring adding top-of-the-rotation starters to their current mix.”

Those reports would fall in line with what chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said about Boston’s offseason goals. Breslow reportedly has been one of the more “persistent” executives in the market, and he knows the Red Sox still have needs to address.

However, the Sandoval deal also showed Breslow’s ability to think ahead beyond just one season, and the 28-year-old could provide a boost in the future.

The Red Sox are still a competitive player in the market and another move could be in the works as the offseason continues along.
