Spurs have strong underlying numbers, but injuries hold them back

Tottenham’s season has been defined by inconsistent results and consistent injury problems. They currently sit 10th in the Premier League table, however, their underlying numbers suggest a better standing than the table suggests.

According to Understat’s model, Tottenham leads the Premier League in non-penalty expected goals and pressing intensity.

Spurs still have the most absentees in the league, which is making it harder for Tottenham to defend and attack continuously across a full match.

Guglielmo Vicario still tops Premier League stat table

Despite Guglielmo Vicario having been unavailable for almost one month since his injury against Manchester City, he still leads the Premier League in passing accuracy.

According to WhoScored.com, no other Premier League goalkeeper has managed to topple Vicario’s pass percentage of 90.8%.

Vicario does have the shortest average length of passes by goalkeepers in the Premier League, but his high percentage of accuracy is indicative of the technique and care he puts into his ball-playing.

Squad players perform admirably, but Spurs are missing their starters

The devastating effect of Tottenham’s injury crisis is that it has hit the starting quality as well as the squad depth of the first team. In isolation, each absence can be mitigated, but the continued injuries and suspensions are proving to be a death by a thousand cuts for Spurs.

Fraser Forster has deputised Vicario well so far, however, Forster’s pass accuracy is at 85.1% in the Premier League. This small technical drop-off, when combined with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven being unavailable, makes Tottenham’s build-up play much harder to achieve when under pressure. Let’s not forget Forster’s two passing blunders against Man United on Thursday.

Tottenham still have several games to play before January when some of their players are set to return and the transfer window opens. Spurs need squad depth, but the return of their starting players could prove to be most advantageous.
