Tottenham desperately needed the win

Tottenham needed their big-name stars to step up at St Mary’s and that is exactly what happened, with the likes of Son, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski combining to devastating effect.

The away side completely blew away the Saints within the first 25 minutes, racing to a four-goal lead and essentially putting the game to bed midway into the first half.

Understandably, the likes of Son and Maddison have garnered plenty of praise on the back of the display, but the Tottenham captain insists that others deserve more credit.

Heung-min Son admits he is proud of Tottenham teammates

The 32-year-old, who scored one and picked up another assist in the South Coast, remarked that he was proud of how several of the younger players in the side stepped up and made their presence felt.

When asked about Maddison, Son quipped to Spurs Play after the game: “For me, you always mention Madders [James Maddison] or Deki [Dejan Kulusevski] who all scored but for me, I think we should always mention who is always behind [them] like Pape [Matar Sarr], Lucas [Bergvall] and Archie [Gray], Radu [Dragusin], Djed [Spence], even Destiny [Udogie] before he came off.

“So, I think those kinds of situations are very, very helpful and is very good for me to see young lads take responsibility like this, as a captain of this club, makes my job really easy so I’m really proud of the young boys and its well-deserved.”

Son shows again that he is a fantastic leader

This is the sort of message that you want your captain to be sending out to the squad and there is no doubt that Son would have given these players their due in the dressing room.

While Tottenham were up against a poor Southampton side on Sunday, the first-half performance was exceptional and it was the sort of display that could bring back some confidence to the squad, which appeared devoid of belief.
