Jack Grealish and Tottenham: a connection revisited

Jack Grealish is at a pivotal moment in his career, with his time at Manchester City raising as many questions as it has delivered answers.

Since his £100m move from Aston Villa to The Etihad, the mercurial midfielder has often found himself caught between moments of brilliance and spells of inconsistency, leading to murmurs about his future at the Premier League champions.

The idea of Grealish moving on is not entirely new; Tottenham Hotspur, in particular, have a lingering history with the player.

In 2018, Spurs were on the verge of signing the then-Villa captain, but the deal fell apart at the eleventh hour.

However, as Ange Postecoglou shapes his new-look Tottenham side, the thought of Grealish swapping Manchester for North London has once again surfaced, with many speculating about the impact he could have at the club.

Troy Deeney’s claim: Grealish would thrive at Spurs

Troy Deeney has not held back in his assessment of Grealish’s potential impact at Tottenham.

Speaking candidly on talkSport, about where he believes the England international would best fit, Deeney argued that Grealish would not only succeed at Spurs but would also become a pivotal figure in the squad, seamlessly slotting into multiple roles.

He said: “I don’t want him to go back to Villa. Selfishly with my Blues head on I don’t want Villa to get good again, and genuinely for him, when you go back there’s that expectation that you’re going to be the person you were when you left.

“A fresh start would be great for him where he’s the main man again, where people want to get him the ball.

“Spurs, he walks into that team in every position, easily, whether that’s a winger, a 10 or an eight. Arsenal, no I don’t think he works for Arsenal, who else?

“Liverpool, no he doesn’t work for Liverpool. He won’t go to Manchester United but he’s better than what they have. Who else? Newcastle, easy. There are loads of teams, anyone outside of that top four. I’d argue he’d do well at Chelsea, but they have about 75 wingers.”

“If he went to Newcastle it would be considered a step down, but it’s a massive club with a massive fanbase.”

For Deeney, Tottenham represents the ideal destination, a place where Grealish could thrive as the focal point of the team.

At his best, Grealish is a truly ‘magnificent’ player, a footballer capable of turning games on their head with his creative flair and ability to carry the ball.

Tottenham’s current squad could benefit immensely from such dynamism, particularly as the club seeks to rebuild as they are on the hunt for silverware.

Why Jack Grealish and Tottenham could be a perfect match

From a footballing perspective, the England winger’s versatility would be a significant asset to Tottenham.

With the ability to play as a left-winger, a creative number 10, or even as a box-to-box midfielder, Grealish would offer Postecoglou multiple tactical options.

Spurs’ current squad, while impressive in areas, lacks depth in key positions, and the addition of a player like Grealish could help address that gap.

Beyond the pitch, the commercial benefits of signing a player of Grealish’s profile cannot be ignored.

Daniel Levy, known for his business acumen, would likely relish the opportunity to add one of England’s most marketable players to the Tottenham brand, boosting the club’s global appeal and revenue streams.

The idea of Grealish wearing the white of Spurs may remain speculative for now, but the possibility is tantalising for Tottenham fans. If it ever comes to fruition, the Manchester City ace could prove to be the catalyst for something special in north London.
