MLB Insider Dumps Cold Water On Red Sox’s Juan Soto Pursuit

David Ortiz’s optimism about the Red Sox’s chances of signing Juan Soto might come from a place of bias.

Boston entered the Soto sweepstakes earlier this offseason, and by all accounts, the club’s interest in the superstar free agent outfielder goes well beyond due diligence. But even though Boston reportedly had a productive first meeting with Soto and is open to spending big this winter, the storied franchise reportedly isn’t a likely landing spot for the four-time All-Star.

“The Red Sox have been linked and mentioned a little bit with Juan Soto. I’ll tell you right now, based on what I’ve been told, I’ll be surprised if Juan Soto becomes a Red Sox,” MLB Network insider Jon Morosi said Friday on “Hot Stove.”

Morosi added the “most likely” destination for Soto is New York, whether it be a reunion with the Yankees or the start of a new chapter with the Mets.

But even if the Red Sox don’t sign the 26-year-old Soto, Craig Breslow and his team still could put together a very active and impactful offseason. Boston reportedly has put a big focus on frontline starting pitching and is in the mix for another game-changing slugging outfielder.
