El Camino Real shuts out Kennedy to win City Division II girls flag football title

LOS ANGELES – The El Camino Real girls flag football team capped its inaugural season by capturing the CIF Los Angeles City Section Division II championship with a 26-0 win over Cleveland at Crenshaw High School on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore quarterback Talya Haim led the way as she threw three touchdown passes for the Royals (10-5).

Haim’s TD passes went to senior Amaya Perry, senior Victoria Brown and senior Aniya Spencer.

Abby Liebtecht chipped in with a 48-yard run for a touchdown and Perry added an interception.

“We have some pretty good athletes,” said El Camino coach Rick Hayashida. “A lot of these girls are multi-sport athletes.”

The section final was the fourth time El Camino Real squared off with Kennedy this season. The Royals won three times in the regular season but none were as impressive as Saturday’s win.

“Those games were all pretty close,” said Hayashida. “When you have to play someone a fourth time, it’s going to be difficult. That was a big concern, but we’ve really hit our stride of late. We were confident we could win this one.”

El Camino Real responded with its second shutout of the season. It also marked its second-largest margin of victory this year.

“Most of the year, the first defense really hasn’t given up a whole lot of points,” said Hayashida. “That first defense probably gave up six points or less in most of our games.”

Freshman Cindy Martinez had an interception for the Cavaliers (8-12).
