Familiar injury issues for Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou must be feeling an unpleasant déjà vu. He is once again preparing to travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City potentially without either of his first choice centre backs.

Cristian Romero is a doubt for the match after exacerbating a foot issue while away with the Argentina national team. There originally was hope that Micky van de Ven would be back after the international break, but having only just returned to field work, will be a few weeks away from being involved in matches.

Both of these players are undoubtedly essential in Tottenham being able to play their defensive high line. However, there was an additional injury update which will have significant implications for Tottenham’s front line as well.

Wilson Odobert is a long-term absence

Tom Barclay on X shared Postecoglou’s description that Wilson Odobert will miss “a fair chunk of the season.”

When asked if injuries will force him into January transfers, Postecoglou said (Football London): “It just depends. Again, January is always a tricky one. You don’t really plan for significant things in January, but a lot of that will be dictated by how we are at that time.

“Obviously, Wilson will be out for a fair chunk of the season, Richy hopefully will be back in the new year but similar to Micky we just need to be careful every step of the way and Mikey will still be out for a little bit of time. So, we’re a little bit short there but it just depends if by January we get two or three back we may not need to but we’ll kind of see as it goes.”

Having injured his hamstring against Coventry in the League Cup, Odobert initially missed 5 weeks before making a brief appearance against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League. Odobert then picked up a new injury which recently required surgery and will keep him sidelined until the back end of the season.

Losing Odobert’s 1v1 ability could be season-defining

Wilson Odobert was signed as a perfect profile fit for a winger in Postecoglou’s system. His ability to take on his defender and create openings against low-block defences has been sorely missed already and could present a real issue with him set to miss most of the season.

While Tottenham arguably need a left-footed centre-back just as much, Odobert’s absence has highlighted the need for Spurs to look for another similar profile who can play on the right wing.

In the meantime, Postecoglou will need to figure out some tactical adjustments and ways to rotate Brennan Johnson before the January window. Any success for Tottenham this season depends on it.
