Northville girls soccer blanks Copenhagen to capture program's first state championship
CORTLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- There's a reason teams challenge themselves at the beginning of the season. By taking on tougher non-conference and non-league opponents early on, that prepares them to see the top squads in their class, division, etc., down the road.
The Northville girls soccer team embraced that scheduling approach, and it paid dividends.
Northville started the 2024 season 0-5 after losses to two Class B squads, and three teams from Class C; one of which reached the state tournament for C. So, when it came time for the Section II, Class D tournament, the Falcons were prepared, and ran the table as the two-seed. But they didn't stop there.
Sunday afternoon, Northville completed its postseason journey with a 1-0 victory over Section III's Copenhagen in the Class D state championship game at SUNY Cortland, earning the program's first-ever state title. The ultimate reward for the rigorous schedule head coach Doug Hammons put his team through back in September.
Freshman Lexi Ginter netted the game-winning goal for Northville in the 24th minute off a free kick from Korrine Bly. The defense, anchored by goalkeeper Lilian Chamberlain, kept the Golden Knights' attack at bay for the remainder of the match, recording a third postseason shutout.
Northville concludes a historic campaign with an overall record of 14-7.
