Blues need to work with stakeholders and develop an integrated Matchday Travel Plan. It’s bonkers that they don’t. They can look at all the ‘short terms initiatives’ they want – but if it’s done in silo, it wont work.
What I’d do is:
* Encourage fans to use the hourly New Street to Adderley Park (AP) service primarily; offering a shuttle bus from AP to St. Andrews. This is the 'greenest' option. Look to work with the rail provider to increase service frequency and provide free rail travel to incentivise
* Closer engagement with BCC to work on the sequencing of traffic signals around the ground. Simple stuff like longer green times taking traffic away from the ground at full time. The congestion around the Watering Hole island and at the junction with Victoria Street and Bordesley Green Road can be eased significantly with traffic count sequencing
* A real focus on lifting traffic management (inc temp lights) for non-essential road works on match days within a mile radius of the club (again within the gift of BCC)
* Discussions with Morrisons/BCC to provide a continual left green signal for cars leaving Morrisons. Due to the enforced closures, there is no oncoming traffic from the right, so a quick win and easy to do
* More drastic and longer term, but the development of matchday diversions and restriction of vehicle types on certain roads. The club and BCC will need to do this eventually to cater for a 60000 stadium so look into this now
* Engage an Active Transport Management consultant to identify, invest and develop safe walking routes, cycle paths, canal taxis etc
The shuttlebuses are great but if the congestion isn’t looked at and managed, we’re just adding more traffic.
