Journalist makes claim about the attitude of Tottenham players over inconsistent results
BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty has explained that the attitude of the Tottenham players has to be questioned after their recent loss to Ipswich Town.
Ipswich defeat undid a lot of Tottenham’s good work
Tottenham came into the game on Sunday riding high on confidence, having beaten Aston Villa 4-1 in their previous Premier League game.
Given the Lilywhites’ superb record at home, all signs pointed to a comfortable home win, but unfortunately, Dr Tottenham turned up again and gave Ipswich their first win of the Premier League season.
Ange Postecoglou has come under plenty of criticism following the loss, but McNulty believes that the blame should primarily be put on the players.
Is there an attitude problem at Spurs?
The journalist described Tottenham’s inconsistency as ‘maddening’, questioning how they can go blow so hot and cold within a space of weeks.
He suggested that questions have to be asked about the attitude of the Spurs stars rather than of Postecoglou’s tactics.
When asked if the Australian is out of his depth in the Premier League, McNulty told BBC Sport: “Where do you even start when trying to make sense of Spurs? So impressive in beating Manchester City and Aston Villa and yet so poor on so many other occasions, latterly losing at home to Ipswich Town, who had not won a Premier League game before Sunday
“I do not think Postecoglou is out of his depth in the Premier League but, as he readily acknowledged, there is a maddening inconsistency about Spurs that is his job to resolve.
“It is also down to the players as well. If they reach certain standards they need to maintain them. They cannot be perfect every week but, on the other hand, their attitude must be questioned if there can be such a remarkable drop-off from game to game.”
Can Ange Postecoglou fulfil his promise of winning a trophy at Spurs?
Postecoglou has not been shy of declaring his ambitions to win silverware, even insisting recently that he would have failed this season if Spurs failed to win a trophy (Daily Mail).
Reacting to the Tottenham boss’ silverware claim, McNulty added: “The good Spurs could fulfil Postecoglou’s claim that he always wins a trophy in his second season. The bad Spurs can, as we have seen, lose to anyone.
“Postecoglou must come up with the answers or, as he again readily admits, he will take responsibility for it. It is still early days, however. Remember Spurs are only three points behind Chelsea and Arsenal.”
