Former Premier League manager names player who should not be starting for Spurs
Alan Pardew believes that one Tottenham regular does not deserve an automatic place in Ange Postecoglou’s starting eleven, insisting that he is not at the required level.
Brennan Johnson has blown hot and cold for Tottenham
We are just a few months into the new campaign, but Brennan Johnson has already had a rollercoaster of a campaign.
He started poorly and was subject to a lot of vitriol on social media as a result before managing to go on an amazing run of goalscoring to silence his critics.
However, over recent weeks, the Welsh international has once again gone quiet and his critics are starting to become vocal again online.
Alan Pardew is not a fan of Brennan Johnson
It turns out that Alan Pardew is among those who are convinced that Johnson deserves to be one of the first names on the Tottenham teamsheet.
The former Newcastle boss suggested that the 23-year-old should be used as a rotational option by Ange Postecoglou rather than as a regular starter.
The pundit told talkSPORT: “You’ve got young players with huge potential, even Johnson, who’s a regular in your first team. For me, taking him out of Forest and putting him into Spurs’ first team as a regular, I don’t think so. But in and out maybe.
“That’s the level we’re talking about. Now, Son, I think anybody in the Premier League, any of the top five clubs, would love him in their squad.”
What are the main issues with Johnson at Spurs
No one can argue with Johnson’s attacking output so far this season, with the winger being Tottenham’s top scorer with seven goals across all competitions.
However, he is a very odd profile of winger and does not impact games much when he is not scoring.
While his work off the ball is often excellent, his inability to carry the ball or beat his man means that he is not very effective when teams defend in a low block.
