Son’s injury troubles

Heung-min Son has had a strong start to the season, with two goals and two assists in five appearances. Those two assists came in his most recent Premier League start against Brentford (Transfer Markt).

However, the Spurs captain’s fine run of form was brought to a halt when he suffered a hamstring injury in the Europa League clash against Qarabag. This caused Son to miss two important Premier League fixtures against Manchester United and Brighton and Hove Albion, as well as the international break.

The latest reports on Son’s injury are positive, with journalist Alasdair Gold announcing the 32-year-old should be back training with the team this week. Son himself posted on Instagram three days ago that he would be back ‘soon’.

Despite this, the Korean international returning to training does not mean he is ready to play competitive football again, and Spurs supporters may have to wait until after the West Ham match to see him in the starting XI.

Alasdair Gold’s verdict on when Son will return

While he does not rule Son out of the starting XI for West Ham, Alasdair Gold suggests that Son’s return to action will depend entirely on how his muscles react to training.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold said: “From what I understand, he [Son] should be involved in training over the course of this week at some point.

“But of course, we always have to stress this with muscle injuries of any sort, it’s very much all on those first couple of days.

“Because you can come back, feel absolutely fine, and the moment you get involved in any kind of twisting, turning, contact element to training, you can feel it, and you don’t want to aggregate it. That’s the best-case scenario.”

What this news means for Tottenham

While many have wanted to see Mikey Moore given a chance, Timo Werner has been Ange Postecoglou’s preferred option, and his poor finishing has been frustrating to watch. Moore is an academy talent and, hopefully, will be a Spurs star for many years to come.

It makes so much more sense to invest minutes into his growth over someone who is not only underperforming, but also won’t even be at the club next season. I could understand if Werner was contributing goals, assists, and experience, but as things stand, Mikey Moore feels like a no-brainer.

Spurs supporters will be disappointed if Son is not ready to play at the weekend. But if Son is to avoid a setback in his return to fitness, he must be eased back into the squad at a pace he can manage.
