Jermain Defoe explains why Spurs fans should not compare this season to last

Former Tottenham player and coach, Jermain Defoe, warns fans against comparing Postecoglou’s start to last season with Spurs’ opening to the 2024/25 campaign.

A very different start for Tottenham

There has been a stark contrast between Tottenham’s start to the 24/25 Premier League season and the previous campaign. Spurs are currently sitting in 9th position with ten points after three wins, three losses and a draw from the opening seven matches. 

Many will fondly remember the beginnings of Postecoglou’s tenure in 2023, as Tottenham got off to a meteoric start with five wins and two draws in their first seven. 

In spite of some excellent performances, including a comprehensive win against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and a run of five wins on the bounce in all competitions, there have also been particularly disappointing losses. The negative results have led to scrutiny of Spurs’ start to the campaign with doubts over what the season may hold. 

Jermain Defoe on Tottenham’s start to the season

Speaking to Gambling.com, Jermain Defoe thinks it is too soon to make any judgements on the season as a whole and that last year was very different under Postecoglou.

He said: “It’s early days, I think. There’s a long way to go.

“Last season, the first 10 games of last season, people were making a lot of noise about Tottenham, with the way they were playing and stuff like that, because it was different from under Antonio Conte.

“Ange came in and changed the style. He came with his sort of like philosophy, and the players have bought into that straight away. The new signings had hit the ground running.”

Defoe acknowledges the contrast between the two seasons, but pleads patience with so much of the campaign left to go, saying: “They’ve not had the same start, but at the same time, I do feel like it’s still early days. It’s a long season, but I wouldn’t say it’s been the same start as last season.

“When you look at the [Manchester] United game, you saw signs there that it’s a team going in the right direction. But even from the first game against Leicester, and then the loss to Newcastle, it’s been a sort of stop-start season really so far.”

Consistency is key for Spurs

It was expected that with the additional demands of the Europa League and hopes to progress further in the domestic cups, this season would present different challenges for Postecoglou and Tottenham.

With countless games ahead, the hope will be that Tottenham can replicate more of the performances seen against Manchester United and fewer of those against Brighton. 

Spurs will be hoping the steadily approaching returns of Heung-min Son, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert can provide the depth they require to achieve consistent performances in all of their upcoming matches.
