Loan spells and steady progress

Devine, a talented 20-year-old midfielder, has already made two senior appearances for Spurs in the FA Cup, and while his first-team chances have been limited, Tottenham’s attention to his development has not wavered.

Since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2023, Devine’s journey has taken him on loan stints across England and beyond. Last season saw the young midfielder sharpen his skills with Port Vale and Plymouth Argyle, gaining valuable experience in lower-league football.

However, Spurs had grander plans for him this season, sending him to Belgium’s KVC Westerlo. It’s clear that the club sees potential in the England U20 international, who is now being tested at a higher level in the Jupiler Pro League.

Westerlo may be a stepping stone in Devine’s career, but Tottenham’s involvement in his development remains consistent and hands-on. The young midfielder has made four appearances for the Belgian side, steadily integrating into their system, and Het Nieuwsblad (via SportWitness) recently caught up with him to reflect on his experience at Tottenham and beyond.

Tottenham’s steady hand in Devine’s journey

Devine’s recent interview revealed the extent to which Spurs are still keeping a close eye on his progress, even as he plays away from the Premier League.

During the chat, Devine explained how Tottenham’s performance manager, Andy Scoulding, visited Westerlo to monitor his progress. Devine spoke glowingly about the relationship between himself and the club, describing how Tottenham’s involvement motivates him.

Devine said: “Andy Scoulding was recently in Westerlo. After the match, we had a long chat. It’s nice that they follow you so closely. That involvement is motivating.

“Scoulding is a professional, he has already worked at Rangers, Valencia, Olympiacos and Liverpool, so he knows what he is talking about. If I need something, they are always there.”

Scoulding’s visit is no small gesture—his experience working with top clubs like Rangers, Valencia, and Liverpool speaks to the professional care being taken with Devine’s development.

The midfielder acknowledged that if he ever needs something, Spurs are always there for him, providing reassurance that his parent club still has a vested interest in his career, even when he’s hundreds of miles away.

Despite being loaned out, Devine still feels part of the Tottenham family. Reflecting on his pre-season involvement with the first team under Ange Postecoglou, Devine spoke with warmth about the strong relationship he’s built with the coach and the group.

“At Spurs, I had good conversations with coach Ange Postecoglou,” Devine explained. “I went on an internship with the first team, and I still feel involved in the group. You never know what the future will bring, but you are so happy to be in the picture.”

A bright future awaits as Devine looks to shine

While his current focus is firmly on improving his game at Westerlo, Devine remains hopeful about his future at Tottenham. As he continues to grow and mature in the Belgian top-flight, his performances will undoubtedly be scrutinised by those back in North London.

With a contract that runs until 2027, Tottenham clearly see a long-term investment in Devine. While he is yet to break into the Premier League side regularly, his talent and work ethic are evident, and the club’s careful management of his development suggests they still believe in his potential to contribute to the first team in the future.

Devine’s immediate challenge, however, is to secure a regular spot in Westerlo’s lineup, where he can showcase his skills and prove that he is ready for the next step in his career.

Spurs will be watching, and if he continues to develop at this pace, it might not be long before he’s knocking on the door of the Tottenham first team once again.
