This Was Great Sign For Patriots In Drake Maye’s First NFL Start

Jacoby Brissett vowed to support Drake Maye after the rookie took his job with the Patriots. That’s easy to say when you’re surrounded by a boatload of reporters.

But on Sunday, Brissett’s first game watching from the sideline this season, the veteran quarterback backed up his claim.

Maye provided arguably New England’s best offensive highlight of the season to date in his first NFL start. With the Houston Texans leading by two touchdowns late in the first half at Gillette Stadium, Maye cut the Patriots’ deficit in half with a gorgeous 40-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte. The bomb not only gave New England fans hope for the Week 6 contest, but also for Maye’s potential ascent into a legitimate franchise signal-caller.

The Patriots sideline unsurprisingly came unglued after Maye and Boutte connected for six. And one of the first players to run down the sideline to celebrate was Brissett, who ditched his winter coat to meet Maye and other teammates in the end zone.

Brissett’s support didn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated by Maye, who threw three touchdowns in New England’s loss to Houston. The 22-year-old particularly was thankful for Brissett helping him settle down, which surely wasn’t even given Maye’s wide range of emotions last weekend.

Maye undoubtedly will endure more growing pains as his debut campaign unfolds. But it will be easier for the 2024 first-rounder to overcome those obstacles with an experienced veteran like Brissett by his side.
