Spurs Under-18 defender tipped to follow in Ledley King’s footsteps
Tottenham Hotspur may have a generational talent on their hands, with John Wenham picking out one Under-18s defender as the best player in the youth team and suggesting he can go on to emulate the success of Ledley King.
Junai Byfield is a star in the making
The Tottenham academy has produced some superstars over the years, and it sounds like the youth system is churning out some top talent for the future once more.
While all eyes at the moment are on the prolific Luca Williams-Barnett, Lilywhite Rose podcast host John Wenham has suggested there is a better, more underrated player among the ranks of the Under-18s team right now.
Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur News, Wenham claimed young defender Junai Byfield is the one to watch, and suggested he can reach the levels of Spurs legend Ledley King one day.
Wenham said: “Williams-Barnett isn’t even the top outstanding prospect in that group, which is mind-blowing. I believe Byfield has the most potential. He is a central defender, which means he won’t get the credit of forwards with the goals and assists they provide.
“However, he is outstanding. I think Tottenham might finally have somebody who could be the heir to King. A defender who can come through the academy and make a real impact on the first team.”
Who is Junai Byfield?
Byfield is a 16-year-old centre-half turning out for the Spurs Under-18 team right now. He has missed just 19 minutes of action so far this season, helping the young Lilywhites side to a great start to the campaign, with just one defeat this term.
He also featured for the England Under-17s team across three friendlies in the September international break.
Can he match Ledley King?
It is a tall order for anyone to reach the levels Ledley King did. It’s wild to think just how great King could have been were it not for his injuries, and how revered he would be now if he had stayed fit. If Junai Byfield can continue on his current trajectory, and stay fit, there’s no reason he cannot have a special Spurs career.
