Virgil Van Dijk thinks Spurs have one of the best finishers in Premier League

Virgil van Dijk has made a big claim about one Tottenham forward but his assertion will not come as a surprise to Spurs fans.

Best finisher in world football?

While Son’s goal tally may not be as impressive as the best marksmen in Europe, the forward’s finishing prowess is arguably second to none.

Season on season, the South Korean considerably outperforms his xG (The Athletic), with his ability to finish with either foot from outside the box putting him in a class of his own.

Van Dijk’s confession

Van Dijk spoke about some of his best moments in a Liverpool shirt and one of the instances that was discussed was his defending against Tottenham in 2019.

The Dutchman found himself in a two-on-one situation, with Moussa Sissoko and Son baring down on goal, with the Frenchman eventually firing over the bar.

The Reds star explained that his priority was to ensure that the ball never made it to Son, given the Spurs forward’s finishing prowess.

Van Dijk told The Premier League’s YouTube channel: “It all goes very quickly, he could’ve scored that quickly, but in that split second I’m thinking don’t play the ball to Son.

“I cover that line and I block that line because I think Son is one of the best finishers in the Premier League, left and right footed. Knowing that Sissoko was a right-footed player that was the decision I had to make, basic defending but it worked very well.”

Highly rated by his peers

Perhaps the best measure of a footballer’s ability is how highly he is rated by his peers, which is why the PFA Player of the Year award has such prestige, with the players voting for the winner.

By that metric, Son has undoubtedly been one of the best in the Premier League for many years, with his opponents and his teammates always speaking very highly of the Tottenham man.

Just a few days ago, Manchester City star Jack Grealish told talkSPORT that he would take the Spurs captain over both Luis Diaz and Franck Ribery.
