Van de Ven is not yet a regular

While Van de Ven’s stock is rising rapidly in the Premier League, with many now considering him to be one of the best in the league in his position, the Tottenham man has not quite managed to cement himself in the starting eleven of his national side.

That is partly down to the embarrassment of riches that the Netherlands have in central defence, with the 23-year-old primarily being used as a left-back option at the recent Euros.

Calls for change in position

The Tottenham star featured as a left-back again on Saturday as Ronald Koeman’s men played out a 1-1 draw with Hungary. Dutch outlet AD were complementary of Van de Ven’s display at the Puskas Arana in Budapest.

With Virgil Van Dijk suspended for Netherlands’ clash against Germany on Monday after being sent off against the Hungarians, they suggested that the Spurs man deserves a chance to show what he can do in the heart of the defence in Munich.

The publication wrote: “The calls for Van de Ven grew louder and louder. But a starting spot against a Hungarian team that retreated in masses, it was not tailor-made for the speed devil.

“For Van de Ven now a chance beckons to show himself in Munich as a centre-back now that Van Dijk will not be there against the Germans. The place in the axis of the field, that is also his preference Van de Ven said earlier himself.”

Impressive numbers

Even though it was not smooth sailing for the Dutch in Hungary, Van de Ven came out of the game with a lot of credit, having a staggering 111 touches of the ball and boasting of a pass accuracy of 96 per cent (Sofascore).

The former Wolfsburg man made three clearances, won one aerial duel and won three ground duals, as he proved to be an impenetrable wall down the away side’s left flank.
