Defender admits Tottenham almost sold him to AC Milan two years ago

Tottenham did business with AC Milan in the summer, selling Emerson Royal to the Serie A giants. But, it turns out they almost sold another player to the Rossoneri two years earlier.

Japhet Tanganga was close to AC Milan

After struggling to break into the regular Tottenham XI due to a mixture of competition and injury problems, Japhet Tanganga was heavily linked with a move to Serie A in 2022.

Fabrizio Romano reported at the time that Milan and Spurs were in talks over a potential deal, with Fabio Paratici heading up negotiations on behalf of the North London club.

Gazzetta dello Sport (22/07/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) even claimed that a £17m fee had been agreed between the two sides before a deal eventually fell through.

Tanganga comments on AC Milan move

Tanganga’s agent, Roberto De Fanti has revealed in the past to TuttoMercatoWeb that Antonio Conte blocked his transfer to AC Milan in 2022.

The player himself, who joined Millwall on a free transfer in the summer, has now confirmed he was close to joining the Serie A giants and wants to play in Italy one day.

Tanganga told Gianluca Di Marzio: “I was close to AC Milan and I would like to play in Serie A in the future, but now I am focused on Millwall, where I am finding consistency.”

Tottenham made a mistake

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but Spurs clearly made a mistake by not selling to AC Milan two years ago. After all, they missed out on a £17m fee because of it.

In truth, it was a transfer that suited all parties. Tottenham would have cashed in on an injury-prone player. Tanganga would have made a huge move to a big club. AC Milan would have secured a talented signing who is likely better suited to Serie A football than the physicality of the Premier League.
